Using CodeBox in 2015
CodeBox hasn’t had an update in almost three years. And while that might give me pause when buying a new app (and investing time in making it a meaningful part of my workflow), the fact is that CodeBox has run almost perfectly the entire time I’ve owned it.
There is one small bug I’ve seen, and some areas could be improved. But I use it countless times every day, and it is just wonderful. Using CodeBar to search for snippets and paste into Sublime Text or Sequel Pro is super easy, and I regularly add new snippets, new smart groups, new tags, etc.
Be warned that the file format is XML-like, but the actual code is stored in some kind of encrypted format. That means you can’t just open a CodeBox library file and see all of your code, but you can simply drag-and-drop your snippets to the Finder to export them as regular files. The proprietary format has not been an issue for me.
I do hope an update will come someday, but I see no need to jump ship. It may not be the latest, but it’s still the greatest.
