CodeBox App Reviews

Best of the best.

I have used many of the other Top Snippet Managers and find CodeBox to better fit my needs. Also their Customer Support is the most responsive to date. Thanks for making a great app.

Awesome software

I was thinking of writing something like this when your product was made aware to me. Thanks, for being ahead of the curve. Full screen support please.

Easy. Time Saving. Powerful.

I love it! Thank you for saving me so much time! The auto text completion has saved me countless minutes copying and pasting while coding. I have even used it for personal data as well to fill out forms. Great job. Keep up the improvements!

Nice IF you can run it

I liked it well enough till it came out with an update. Ooops, if you are not on Lion or on a 64 bit version of 10.6, and any early MBP cant, then you are SOL. I understand that this is an Apple pushed thing but this is exactly why I was hesitant and now will not buy anything that is only sold through the App store. As a user I want to be able to deal with the developer and maybe have some influence. But now Apple trumps all the users. So this app works OK but is orphaned for folks who dont feel the need to jump to whatever new version of Mac OS Apple decides it wants to force everyone to move to.

Great app, but extremely buggy

I really like this app, but it has a number of bugs that interrupt workflow and make it frustrating to use at times. In the latest version, snippets are expanded without me hitting tab, so I keep getting unwanted expansions as I type. Also, I cant just click on tabs without highlighting all of them. You have to click right on the edge of the tab to select. Im also unable to search all my snippets in the snippet column, if the tag list is showing in the far left column. I have to first change to the folder view, select all snippets again and then conduct a search. Finally, everytime I launch the app, it forgets my menubar setting. Every time I have to open prefernces to turn it back on. Lots of potential in this app, but some of the bugs have got to be worked out.

Great tool

This is a great tool for storing useful pieces of code. In the past I would bookmark websites and hope that they would still be there. For code that I used, I would have to search through previous apps and sites to get the snippet that I needed. No more! CodeBox is great!

save my career

I suffer a cathastrophic failure of 2 gigantic main disks, lost TBs of data, except my snippets and the annotations of my proyects in Codebox, I cant thanks long enough

Very impressed with the support

I just bought this and noticed that my c# snippet didnt have any syntax highlighting. I emailed support and got a response within minutes. Turns out there is support for all kinds of languages. I should have checked the preferences before emailing.

Did you know...

… that if you throw your snippet file in Dropbox, it syncs perfectly between computers? Yeah. I love Codebox :)

Best Snippet Manager

This is a great app with great customer support. I started to use it as my new repository for code snippets (CodeRunner is used for full code management). The layout is intuitive and easy to navigate. It was easy enough to have my cbxml file live on dropbox so I dont need to worry about backing it up and using across multiple computers. Customer service is top notch. Many of my emails were answered in under 24hrs, may within minutes. Only con is that the Shell Script (and other languages?) doesnt support using semi-advanced features like using # in variables (${#var} to get the number of characters in the string) because the rest of the line will look like its commented out. Overall, I can live with the limitation and hope it gets fixed in the future, but its an easy buy.

A lot of very rough things, but usable

Importing: Under features it states it can import snippets from other snippet managers. When attempting to do this, it correctly discovers my previous snippet library, yet upon import it crashes. Try it again, it crashes again. And again. Pretty bummed. Not excited about doing all of this by hand. Tabs: The editor is hardwired to 4 spaces per tab. I cant see anyway to change this. If you are used to seeing all your code at 2 spaces, your code will look different in codebox. Not a huge deal, but visually annoying. Syntax highlighting. On a regular basis, codebox goes off into the ether and all syntax highlighting goes away. A moment later it comes back. Annoying, but doesnt kill the product. When doing whatever it is doing when syntax highlighting goes away, it will change you position in the editor, as in moving up a few pages. I notice this most when moving focus from codebox to another app. This one is super annoying as I need to then scroll and find my place in the code. If its a 10 line snippet, no big deal. If you have a long listing, its simply lost time. Worst is it will do this when you are directly in the editor. Its like trying to write on a piece of paper and the person across the table is jerking the paper around. Finally at times it has simply failed to highlight syntax after some point in a longer listing. The code is highlighted to a certain point, and then all highlighting stops. The app sells for $5-10, so Im not expecting miracles, but with all the annoying things, I cant score it any higher than 3.

Useful for more than just snippets

I picked up this app in an app sale, not expecting to use it much but after a short while, this app has become quite indispensable. I use it not only for storing code snippets, but for storing written instructions on how to do various odd tasks with Subversion and MacPorts that Ive never been able to commit to memory because I dont need to do those often enough. I also save reference material such as the NATO alphabet. With everything I need saved away in CodeBox, its easy to look up that information when I need it without getting on the web. Its really more like a fast, personal text database.

Favorite snippet manager

Having used multiple systems for managing snippet, including other native Mac OS apps, this is my new favorite. Sharing: Im in the process of moving my snippets from Snippets.app to CodeBox so that I can easily share snippets between machines. With the former, it is possible but is not officially supported. With CodeBox, I just store my snippets in my Dropbox folder. Very straightforward. UI: The application allows me to store just enough metadata about the snippet without cluttering the interface; and the ability to have multiple assets per snippet is an interesting addition. The minimalist view in the snippet table dramatically unclutters the interface. Very nice addition. The themes are nice. Allows me to keep things consistent between my code editor and CodeBox. Hotkey/snippet replacement: I dont use the hotkey replacement tools in snippet managers because I use another text replacement app and I dont like having two (or more) apps to deal with for troubleshooting and finding hotkeys. Im sure it works as intended. Overall: Well-conceived piece of software - my new favorite.

Fantastic, indispensable

As a developer, I depend on this app to manage the many code snippets I write or run across. Really great tool.

Great!

Just would really like to see iCloud support so I don’t have to manually move my clips between machines. Other than that: awesome.

Awesome Little App!

Love this app when I am coding up a site. The menu item makes it super simple to grab snippits of code! I have an entire WordPRess section with all tags for easy template building. It is a huge time saver! Love it!

I can see this being a very useful tool

But badly needs a help file of some sort. Even the screenshots indicate some type of variables built in. But no info on how to use them or are there any other ones? Also, being able to show line numbers would be great.

Unbelievably great

This app works exactly as it should, and is everything I was hoping for. No kidding, I’m beginning to think the developer somehow hacked into my brain and stole the idea. I’m only afraid that it will get worse overtime, since it couldn’t get any better. Apps that are awesome usually become cluttered and unusuable overtime because the developers try to do too much and introduce too many features that aren’t needed (hope this doesn’t happen here). That aside, I’m seriously in love with this thing. I’ve spent the last few hours migrating and editing my old snippets because it’s worth it (you’ll agree when you try it). This thing is going to save you alot of time if you invest some in learning to use it. My only suggestion would be for the developer to include a ‘help guide’ to explain the basic functionality and some of the available features, it took me a while to figure everything out. A tip for newbies like me: When editing a snippet, you can easily add a variable placeholder to your code by typing “__placeholder__” (without the quotes). Overtime, you might find this to be a major time saver when used together with the CodeBar menulet (included). In order to use a placeholder, simply do a snippet search using CodeBar, select the right one from the list, and select “Edit Code”. This will bring up a semi-transparent window where you will see the entire snippet and be able to tab through and assign placeholder values. Please keep up the great work, and don’t change things too much.

Great Functionality, Needs @2x

If you are looking for a beatiful and fully featured box for your code snippets, then CodeBox is the app for your. Support for TONS of languages, syntax highlighting, flexible organization tools (smart folders FTW!), and a really nice interface. The only thing that bothers me is that it is not retina-optimized yet. While this is fine when I’m using my external monitors, it looks quite poor on the rMBP. Also, it would be soo cool if you could run the code from directly within the app, like CodeRunner. :D

Needs better integrattions!

Would appreciate better Dropbox integration and would like functionality with Github like I can get with Gisto. Don’t let Snippets and Gisto beat you!
